Ok just one more, this sums it up quite well,
For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.

Well, what actually happened is that Atlee ran the country off the deep end with a centrally planned nanny state, which Thatcher inherited, just at the point which said regime had reached a state of collapse, so yes, eventually, the piper will have to be paid for the policies of the Atlees of the world, and thank goodness there are Iron Lady's, to take the hard decisions, to do what must be done, even if and when it is not popular, to give the bad news to the masses.

I think it's unfair to blame Atlee when it was the Labour governments of the 70's and Heath's inability to stand up to the miners which gave the unions too much power not to mention the oil crisis which gave us inflation of 22%.Smitty-48 wrote:Well, what actually happened is that Atlee ran the country off the deep end with a centrally planned nanny state, which Thatcher inherited, just at the point which said regime had reached a state of collapse, so yes, eventually, the piper will have to be paid for the policies of the Atlees of the world, and thank goodness there are Iron Lady's, to take the hard decisions, to do what must be done, even if and when it is not popular, to give the bad news to the masses.
Atlee gave us the NHS and the welfare state despite coming to power when the country was bankrupted by WWII.
Maggie halted the power of the Unions but took it too far leaving them virtually powerless and the British workers suffered because of it.
The rich got richer but the poor got unemployed.

Re: Muslims
Atlee was simply the one who bribed the masses with their own money, the fact that the British public could not wean themselves off a quasi-communist economy, where everyone either worked for the public sector or was propped up by the public sector, to the point of being on the verge of a pseudo Soviet style collapse, may not be Atlee's fault, but it wasn't Margaret Thatcher's fault neither, the difference between Thatcher and Atlee, is simply that Atlee could not take a hard decision, to control the runaway growth of a state leviathan which would by the 1970's be collapsing under its own weight, whereas Margaret Thatcher could

But without the welfare state that disgruntled squeegee merchant would be doing more than snapping your aerial off. It's a matter of balance and too much power and a lack of consensus made Maggie go too far the other way. Trouble is our current Labour leader is stuck with a 70's mentality so we are stuck with the Tories until they get rid of him. I like an occasional swing from left to right so we end up somewhere in the middle and don't get a divided society between the rich and the poor.

Re: Muslims
It's absolute nonsense to say that Thatcher dismantled the welfare state, at most, she moderately curtailed its growth, to stave off a collapse, the welfare state in Britain was alive and well when I was there in the 1980's, this narrative of a socialist paradise followed by Thatcher imposed minarchy, is nonsensical balderdash on the face of it, this is just a silly Leftist talking point, which, as I said, I would simply answer with the jackboots, and if they are want to burn me in effigy, go right ahead, like Thatcher, I'd wear their barbs as a badge of honour.

Hold up. Weren't those a shit ton of bloated government jobs she cut? That's a good thing. I hope Trump does the same. I'd love to see unemployment go up 10% if it were all government workers.
