They also are less likely to get as good of a TV deal in the future when they play chicken with the NHL as well, the NHL isn't going to cave to the IOC on this, and doing that just puts in doubt whether they'll show up at any future Olympic games. The decision makes no sense financially. You want to believe the IOC is looking out for their own best interests at least, but they aren't even doing that, that is the crazy part, that's how bad of call this is.

I suspect the real reason is the same as why the worlds best soccer players don't go to the Summer games. Team owners don't want to risk injuring their multi-million dollar players and have them miss out on league matches after the games.
