I wouldn't mind owning a modern junk, honestly. Those are nice boats.

That joke constantly appears in every history class I walk in. It's one of the better puns you get. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

If there is a funny thing to this, it's what wikipedia reports as the ship's motto: "Fortune favors the Bold".

Not necessarily. You can get them built in the states too. They really are nice yachts. They have a lot more space than European-style yachts.

So, Singapore Maritime Traffic Control is saying that the USS John McCain was not broadcasting an AIS signal at the time of the collision, only the MV Alnic MC was broadcasting AIS.

Thing is, it's not uncommon for warships to decline to transmit AIS, intentionally, for OPSEC, because AIS is an unsecure civilian transponder which both identifies the ship and its location, which, if you think about what happened the USS Cole and the terrorist boat attack in Aden, US Navy ships may not want to be doing, since that's broadcasting exactly who and where they are in the crowd, to any terrorist who might be attempting to find and attack them.

Thus, this may explain why the Alnic MC was heading for the destroyer and not turning and why MTC was not warning them to turn, because they may have both been over relying in AIS and weren't seeing the destroyer otherwise.
