Re: Outdoors thread
That's kind of why I don't want to get into fly fishing, really. It just looks super lame to me that I have to buy all this kit just to catch a fucking fish.
All I want to do is provide myself with cheaper sources of protein. But if I have to buy all this shit, it's cheaper to go to the store, which makes it not worth my time.
I really miss salt life sometimes.

You can make fly lures with materials. I think it's an interesting technique but yeah it's obviously more expensive than bait fishing.
I still remember catching so many rainbow trout on spoon lures. So many

So how much will it cost me to start pulling trout out of the rivers in the mountains?

First, you can use flies with a conventional spinning rod in small streams and rivers pretty effectively. It's more about matching what they are feeding on.
Second big key is to work to find out what they are feeding on. Turn over rocks at the streams edge, see what is hatching and crawling around on and under rocks. See what's flying around, look at slower what and see what is emerging. If you catch a fish on bait or lures, cut open their gut and see what they've been eating. Then try your best to match it.
You can get an inexpensive rod, reel and line under $50 online. They work, they are not as supple or as effective as better rods, but they work. My Grandpa fly fished with a $2 Woolworth telescoping tin rod. The rod was like casting a pine bow, but it caught fish.

That's your killer right there Doc, the simple Wooly Worm. Hands down the most effective fly EVER made. You can get them in about any color, just match to your area and feed. I like natural colors, white, brown, black and green. Don't confuse them with the Wooly Bugger, which is a 'streamer' and replicates most often a leach. The Wooly Worm replicates a nymph or worm in the water depending on the type you have.
My recommendation is to pick up a variety of wooly worms and attempt to perfect the use of that one fly. It's the easiest to make, easiest to fish and most effective. Snobby Fly Fishers detest this fly, they can pound sand.

Taught myself to fly fish years ago. The hard part is finding enough room to cast. Never did learn to tie anything myself, but they're cheap enough.

Yeah, it's a pain to lose your fly on a tree or bush behind you. I tied a little growing up, but one of my brothers was so good at it he just tied everything.GrumpyCatFace wrote:Taught myself to fly fish years ago. The hard part is finding enough room to cast.
