I thought Show Me a Hero was well written and well made, but it got a little preachy. He also played a bit fast and loose with the facts. I believe the real Yonkers story involved schools not section 8, though I could be remembering this wrong.StCapps wrote:I only watched the first episode too, but I hear it gets good, and David Simon's television work is always a slow burn that isn't really fair judge after only one episode. He is telling the story of a community, so it's not going to come across fully formed after only one episode. Like I said the man made late 80's Yonkers public housing politics interesting for six episodes, in Show Me A Hero, if he can do that with a subject that doesn't seem that interesting on the surface, then a community in New Orleans post-Katrina should be no problem, and if word of mouth is to be believed, that logic holds up.heydaralon wrote:I made it through one episode of Treme. It wasn't my thing I guess. I have no doubt it was well researched and accurate, but I was just bored with it. If he had made a show about NOLA immediately after Katrina, and the looting, murder, and Mad Max anarchy that followed, I would have eaten that show up, but watching Bunk Moreland try to hustle a taxi driver or the fare was quite disappointing to me.
It's on the "to watch" list for sure, I will get around to it eventually. I have faith in David Simon, and Treme is the kind of story he excels at telling on television, and in a way other showrunners can only dream of or poorly imitate. If it's been overrated, I'd be fairly surprised, this seems like an underrated show that never got the love it deserved.
What show are you watching right now?

I really enjoy Last Kingdom. It does have some silliness, but much less than other shows.GloryofGreece wrote:Was Vikings and Last Kingdom mostly disliked here as well?

God this season of Game of Thrones sucks. It is too focused on Jon Snow and Daneryius. How many fucking episodes do we need to have with them talking back and forth. I don't give a shit about either of them, the dragons, or the zombies. Goddamnit. The latest episode is pretty boring so far too, and I wouldn't be surprised if the show stays completely shitty from here on out. The best thing they could do for the show is to kill off Danyrius. No one would suspect that, and it would piss off the fans so much. And kill off some of those stark rat-children. Sansa is pretty terrible and Arya and Bran are not much better. Jon should have stayed dead. Fuck Game of Thrones. They officially ruined it.

As I said before, it's been garbage since they passed up RR Martins books - somewhere in season 3 I think. After the red wedding, it's all been downhill.heydaralon wrote:Do not like the show anymore either?GrumpyCatFace wrote:Welcome to the dark side.heydaralon wrote:God this season of Game of Thrones sucks. It still has pretties, and I enjoy the spectacle, but it's just fluff now.

You called it Transformers: The Show. That is an excellent take. The difference is that everyone knows Michael Bay is a talentless hack who just uses CGI to make up for his lack of skill as a filmmaker. There are people who think the later seasons of GoT are actually deep and good, when they have been using the Michael Bay playbook since season 5. I am completely disgusted. What a waste.

This is an excellent article that speaks a forbidden truth we are all too scared to admit:
https://geeks.media/why-game-of-thrones-sucks-now
I could write a series longer than GRRM about why the last 3 seasons have been a complete waste of time and money.

Re: What show are you watching right now?
Set up episode that moved shit along quicker than the shows usual pacing, which at this point in the story is necessary. They set up the big penultimate episode that they build to every season. What Game of Thrones lacks in consistency it makes up for with big moments, usually in the second last episode of the season. GoT is a lot like Boardwalk Empire in that way, it drags while setting up a big explosion and then they make sure to make that explosion go off with extra big bang at the end of the season. If GoT finishes as well as Boardwalk did, that would be nice, that show stuck it's landing far better than I ever expected, maybe GoT will do the same?
Still not seeing a ruined show here, it just isn't as good as last season was, at least thus far, and they are saving a lot for the final season, but hell even The Americans fell into that trap in it's penultimate season, and that is a better show than Game of Thrones. Hell even Mad Men followed a similar trajectory in second last year on TV, if you'll recall, before finishing out real strong in the second half of it's final season a year later. Lots of quality shows have suffered a penultimate season/year slump, it's not the end of the world, and it isn't always a sign that a show won't nail it's landing, better shows than GoT have gone through this and come out just fine on the other side. Food for thought.
