Sometimes planes get overbooked and when they do you aren't entitled to act like a bitch and force a confrontation by refusing to give up a seat to a customer who paid more for a seat. This guy should have known there was an overbooking bump risk when he skimped on the ticket price, but instead he just acted like a giant asshole.

The change comes as rival United Airlines faces not only broad public backlash, but also a lawsuit stemming from a passenger’s forced removal from a sold-out flight last weekend.

Specifically, the AP said that it had obtained an internal Delta memo authorizing the airline’s gate agents to offer as much as $2,000 in compensation for overbooked flights, up from a previous high of $800, while Delta supervisors can now offer up to $9,950, up from a $1,350 maximum.

You want the airlines to keep 400,000 seats free, every day, all year, in case they have nonrev/must fly.

400,000 * 365 = 146,000,000 seats per year guaranteed no revenue.

Let's sell those seats for $300.

43,800,000,000.00

That's 44 billion dollars in potential lost revenue at $300. (And how many seats sell for only $300? Not very many.)

Can they afford that? (Charge $400 on those lost rev seats and we're right at the $60B mark.)

So, no, California, they can't afford to do that.

I'm not saying you leave 4 seats open, you don't need to create oversold situations, hence "guaranteed" seats for paying passengers.

The passengers are the reason for the airlines, not the crew. If there's some kind of emergency where the crew can't get to where they need to go the airlines need to eat it and figure out better ways to get there. Including chartering small planes
