I would say some of that is lack of access, in these families you are describing there was no lack of access maybe lack of interest.

It's about culture. When you have a culture that values education and literacy no matter what you do for a living, it matters. There's been studies showing linkage between academic success and simply the number of books in the house. American trailer trash and Ghetto types don't value education. But immigrants do. My kid's HS is full of immigrant kids studying their asses off, and they don't hang out after school and weekends at the mall, they study, because their parents will give them hell for bringing home a B. Immigrants want their kids to achieve the American Dream, trailer trash think, "why should my kid be better than me?" Last year's valedictorian was a Chinese girl whose parents work 14 hour days in a restaurant. She's at Princeton.

Didn't you ever see Fiddler on the Roof? The dairyman's wife is thrilled that one of her daughters is to marry a penniless scholar. Of course it can turn and bite you in the ass, like the Ultra Orthodox sucking on the public tit in Israel so they can study Talmud. But that's voting bloc politics like anywhere else.

This demonstrates nothing about culture. We just need a program to put more books in the ghetto. And don't say libraries. What if the poors are too busy working all day and can't find the time to make it to the library? What if they're in a library desert? Did you think of that?
