Just the wrong people gave aid to the campaign.

If Trump's campaign would have been assisted by a sleazy mudslinging take-no-prisoners American Superpac, they would be writing books about it: how awesome the campaign was and they would hail it as an example how a campaign has to be fought to influence the voters. Heck, the Dems would be trying to learn from it and mimick it.

If Trump's campaign would have even been assisted by a friendly intelligence agency, it would have been OK. Publicly the American IC could have turned a blind eye and behind closed doors tell how angry they are to their "friends".

But no, Trump had to, not because of bad judgement but because of the total lack of judgement, to go and get help from an intelligence service that is viewed hostile against the US. And then he had to fire Comey. Then to make matters worse, after firing Comey he just blurted out that he wanted the Russia investigation to go away in a television interview, which then made the whimsical figleaf (that the Comey firing was about how Comey handled Hillary Clinton) evaporate and finally they had to go with Mueller.
