I don't even think Florida can flood. Can it?
Read about the Lake Okeechobee catastrophe in 1929. Thousands of people died in a massive flood.

Rand Paul is introducing a bill to redirect Foreign Aid dollars nor yet committed to pay for storm damage.

Yeah, heard about this this morning - apparently, FEMA will be out of money in 2 days or so.
Florida gov declared state of emergency in ALL 67 counties, even the panhandle. South Carolina did the same, opening up those sweet, sweet federal dollars. Funny how that works, ain't it.

I for one am worried about the impact of this storm on the southern Appalachian mountains. We need some relief funds right away before it's too late.

Out at sea, at landfall it was only a Cat 3.

Not sure if Irma will be Cat 5 at landfall, but it will easily be the worst storm to hit Florida since Andrew.
Right now Irma is like twice the size of Andrew, that's kind of fucked up, Andrew was quite the compact Cat 5, in comparison.

It is projected to be a Cat 4 (with roughly 130 mph winds) by the time it reaches Miami and Irma will cover the whole state as well.

Last I heard it was projected to be a Cat 4 (with roughly 145 mph winds) by the time it reaches Miami. Thankfully it reached Cat 5 too soon before US landfall and will hit on the backend.

Must mean sustained winds. Iirc Katrina was like 90-110 with gusts of 160

Cat 5 is 157+ mph sustained winds. So 145 mph sustained, isn't that far off really, the gusts will be cat 5 strength. Plus Irma is hitting Florida much more directly than Andrew which just kind of passed through.
