In England, a lot of them vote for the Tories, or UKIP, the working classes are not the constituents of Labour anymore, not even in Scotland, where they are flipping to the SNP.

Government should not be investing in housing, Thatcher had it exactly right, not the role of government to house you, determining housing supply and demand is the role of the market.

The interest rates peak in 1980 when Thatcher had only been in government for a few months, they never reached that peak again, property prices rise steadily but not sharply throughout, and no evidence of a real estate crisis resulting in widespread repossession that I can see.
