Woh. Looks like ARABS totally invented their own numeric system and maths! BASEDThe roots of algebra can be traced to the ancient Babylonians,[8] who developed an advanced arithmetical system with which they were able to do calculations in an algorithmic fashion. The Babylonians developed formulas to calculate solutions for problems typically solved today by using linear equations, quadratic equations, and indeterminate linear equations.

I know that it's original English meaning was setting broken bones. From the Arabic word al-jabr.Fife wrote:Wayment. Does anybody know the etymology 4-1-1 for al jabr?Penner wrote:Did you know that our current writing number system came from the Arabs?Montegriffo wrote:

For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.

Incorrect. It was developed by the Greeks. The Arabs captured half the western world, the most advanced cities therein, and inherited a lot of books as plunder. They translated some of it to Arabic. Copies of the Arabic math books made their way to Christendom by way of the exchange going on between Andalusia and the Spanish kingdoms. The write of the book was something like Al Jabr. They just took to calling the kind of math that was written in Al Jabr's book algebra. But the book itself was from Greek sources that the western Europeans had long since forgotten due to rotting paper (this is why they invented vellum to create medieval books that still exist today). The contribution made by Arabs was their numbering system, which is definitely superior to our older numbering systems. The contribution of the zero was from India.
Take the European mathematics, combine it with the Indian zero, and the Arabic numbering system, and you have the framework to start modeling the universe around you.
But for the most part, everybody was trying to figure out the minds of Aristotle, Euclid, and Archimedes for a few thousand years until guys like Newton and Copernicus came along.
This "Arabs were really advanced once" stuff is basically another form of we wuz kangz. Their numbering system is great, but it's not like they realized it until they discovered more advanced mathematics from their conquered lands. That contribution was an accident.

Well, I don't think we can claim the smiley. Some Sumerian probably figured that out.TheReal_ND wrote:That's a smiley you tap dancing retard
