I am simply saying that a state that makes room for people blowing off steam, even in ways that I wouldn't positively recommend, is better and more stable than one that doesn't. It seems a load of people on all sides are looking for dust ups, let them have it.

If you believe that the state sanctions violence in the street, you're wrong. Violent protest is not protected speech. The issue is not that two gangs are meeting in the street and rumbling like it's West Side Story. Antifa singles out any political opponent, and attacks them physically. In Berkeley, given the inaction of the police and the mayor, opponents of these Antifa types are forced to defend themselves violently in return.

Civil disobedience really isn't supposed to follow all the rules though... that is kind of the point. People keep showing up to these events, and they keep getting in to fights. What is the solution? No more assembly? Curfews?

Let them vent their frustrations. Seeing that as some harbinger of civil war seems a little panicky to me, but I can't predict the future. Either way, I don't think it is quite time to lace up the jackboots.

I don't think the state sanctions violence in the streets. I am just not sure what the state can (or should) do about it, as people seem to be interested in getting into public fights. You can continue to paint one group as innocent, righteous angels, and the other as rabid savages... but I am not sure if that is what is going on.

In all fairness, I am basing this mostly on the tough talk around here about beating up Antifa pussies and whatnot, and assume that a lot of people share that mindset and are more than happy to get rough. I am neither recommending or condemning that attitude myself... seems pretty natural.

I can't really see what happens in the second video, but I will say this about the first.

The head and face bleed a lot from relatively light contact. It is one of the main reasons for MMA gloves and the like. (Ironically, they allow you to punch harder, doing more serious damage, but people are okay with that because we reflexively assume more blood means more danger, which isn't always true.) Tossing something from the crowd is a TOTAL bitch move... but that counts as light brawling, the amount of blood is deceptive.

And don't get me wrong... I don't mind people who break the law at a protest being arrested. Don't participate in civil disobedience if you are unwilling to get a record.

However, I don't think preemptive crackdowns are a good idea at all.
