Ever notice how socialists have trouble separating these two ideas:

1. You don't think climate change is real.
2. You don't think shoveling endless money into government hands will fix climate change.

It's one of those weird, dogmatic things, where they seem to believe that if you agree climate change is happening, then OF COURSE you agree with raising all sorts of new taxes so that the government can "fix" it. Never seems to cross their minds that the climate can be changing, and no amount of additional money flowing into the coffers of their national representatives is going to fix it.

A serious blind spot with that crowd. I always want to ask them "Suppose your government got 90% of your GDP solely to battle climate change - what are they gonna do with it? They gonna get China to change? Get India to change? Force Russia to go along with some carbon tax scheme? What?"

I am not sure that the Earth is actually getting warmer and, even so, the left's solutions are not even achievable, much less a real solution.

I would rather focus on sustainability and energy independence.

So easy to do it all without the govt dictating the solution. Carbon tax. Promotes renewable and decentralized power. Make it revenue neutral if you like, everyone's refund gets bigger. When you charge for the externalized costs of fossil fuels all sorts of solutions suddenly become competitive.

Doe anyone listen to Econtalk? There should be a thread just for it if you do. I just listened to Russ and Mike Munger desperately try and come to any conclusion other than that capitalism is destined to end up in cronyism and rent seeking. They couldn't.

To summarize: any enterprise eventually comes to the point where a dollar invested in paying politicians to let them 'rent seek' is better spent than just investing in your core business. Any CEO that fails to do so will be replaced by one that does by "responsible" boards or new owners seeking to maximize shareholder return. They could not come up with any counter scenario other than people just "being good".
