I think the North Korean's may have to escalate to an atmospheric test, if they want the Americans to really take them seriously, right now, the Americans are simply viewing this through the lens of the domestic poltical bun fight, with North Korea merely as a prop, if the North Koreans want to break out of that and get some real attention, they're going to need to pop one of these things out in the Pacific.

Just saying that you have a hydrogen bomb, that doesn't really rate, unless they actually see it, they really don't believe it.

That's not how it works, and again, there's nothing the Chinese can do about North Korea which would make any difference, America has simply deluded itself into this narrative, that pressure point doesn't exist, so you don't actually get any leverage there, and in terms of trying to spook other nuclear powers? All that will do is make them invoke their nuclear deterrents, which, China's is reasonanbly scary enough to make America blink.

And Able Archer was not being employed as a power play negotiating tactic in 1983, the Americans and British actually had no idea that it was inciting the Soviets to the brink at the time, nobody knew anything about the War Scare nor Stanislav Petrov nor any of that, until well after the fact, years after the fact.

Yeah, again, Americans have this idea that somehow the Chinese are going to leverage NK by economic means, but it's a mistaken assumption, the North Koreans have demonstrated that they can endure everything up to and including mass famines, so sanctions don't actually leverage them, they just dig their heels in, thus, the Chinese would have to employ a total embargo, but they wouldn't do that, because that would just destabilize the situation ever more, which is exactly what they don't want.

Get it through your heads, Yanquis, the Chinese are not afraid of you, the Chinese don't give a shit what North Korea does as long as they keep that shit in Korea, and so they ain't gonna do shit for you, other than continue to shine you on about it.

They don't believe for a second that America is actually going to war here, America is bluffing and the Chinese are fully aware, so get real.

The regime already has luxury goods, there's two classes of people in North Korea, the ruling class and the peasant class, the ruling class is doing quite well, thank you, so they don't need you, the peasant class is utterly terrorized into submission, so they wouldn't take the luxury goods that you tried to give them, lest they be shot for it, which they would be.
