The republic shall not perish from this earth, even in the face of countervaliue nuclear exchange, merely a setback, the Declaration of Independence will never die.

My money is on the greed of those with their fingers on the trigger.

Why nuke the world when you can rape it?

I would have a much harder time watching others die in my stead than going over the wall myself.

They won't have control of it, once they climb the escalatory ladder, it will take on a life of its own, rational arbitrage will not save you, none the less, it won't be the end of the world, the sun will come up the next day.

That is what makes nuclear war the most just war of them all; everybody goes over the top, one way or the other.

I personally doubt it would actually get to full on countervalue exchange, never mind spasm/insensate war, I would guess it will run out of steam at counterforce-avoidance-strategic pause tbh.

A real humdinger, to be sure, but they don't actually have it all warmed up for bear, if they shot the magazine dry right now, it would be bad, but not eclipse the sky for eternity bad.

As to fermi.

I think it will be a slow silent death to technology rather than a boom.

Like, if Stan Petrov hadn't pulled the chicken switch in 1983, or NORAD hadn't pulled their finger out in 1979, OK, that would have been biblical, no doubt, that was 25,000 warheads loaded up in the wheelhouse, but right now, we're talking more like 3,500.
