Well I always called them Jarhead Faggots to their faces, just to let them know that I didn't give a fuck, and was fully prepared to knock that block off their shoulders, any fuckin' time, any fuckin' place. The Marine Recon guys were cool, but they were definitely at the top of the pecking order, there was no MARSOC back then, so they were the only MARSOF at the time, everybody cut them a wide berth, and when they told the other Marines that we were "Recon", then they stayed out of our way too, there was a kind of aura around the Recce tasking in the Marines.

They were all older guys, mostly NCO's, some Vietnam vets too, all the other Marines sort of worshipped them, Scout Snipers, Combat Divers, they were hardcore, we learned a lot from them actually, they really knew their shit, particularly in the maritime environment which wasn't really our forte.

They did not however, get along with the 82nd Airborne, was about an hour at the bar, the Crown Royal was flowin', and then it went ballistic, exploded into the parking lot, fur flying everywhere.

The Master and the Sar'Major had been at Khe Sanh during Tet. The Gunny's were younger, one of them was Force Recon in Vietnam in 71', the other was at the Fall of Saigon in 75'.

I watched the Ken Burns documentary and all I could think is I'd be scared as fuck if I was those Marines at the embassy. I didn't know they thought they got left behind for awhile.

Too bad those the Marines do every position a rank lower that everyone else and get told it's because they are badasses as opposed to the corps don't wanna give them the same pay for the same job as everyone else.

The guy who was at the Fall of Saigon had a crazy tale, they were at the airport, evacuating Americans, then they airport got shelled, so planes couldn't take off, and they were told a helo would come get them, there was a truck heading back to the embassy, but they thought "fuck it lets wait for the CH-53", but then the helo didn't show, and the truck had already left, and there was no officer, and their Master turns to them and says "boys, we need to commandeer a vehicle here, otherwise, we're gonna have go back downtown on foot, at the double time..."
