It's like no one is aware that all of us have had knock down drag out debates many times where all of the furniture was broken when the dust settled. Except we know they know because they chime in with glee when they see Smitty and Capps get into it. Or me and Smitty. Or STA and Smitty. All of us in this supposed bubble have argued a hundred times in every direction.

It's part of the debate tactics: thrust & parry. There are no boundaries like sumo wrestling: you can get pushed or pulled out of the ring, the match doesn't pause & restart. You bite & scratch. Some people (Clubby) do best when they get their claws in you.

It's not a one on one game on the boards.Martin Hash wrote:It's part of the debate tactics: thrust & parry. Nothing wrong with an ever evolving consensus that can be freely challenged with new ideas at any time. If you don't like what you consider to be the consensus on a certain topic, then challenge it. Whining that a consensus is challenging new beliefs is not a valid criticism of that consensus.Hwen Hoshino wrote:I could very easily see a bubble forming with certain type of assholes randomly showing up an having a consensus about some things.
I think there should be msg board norm across the internet that allows you to go 1 on 3 instead of 1 on 20 on certain issues. ain't nobody got time to debate 20 people at the same time.

Then don't take the time. I think most people already understand. If you are one of those same 20 people you mention, and you have a reply to a post that is different from the three who already posted, why should you not post? If the other guy doesn't have the time, he/she doesn't have the time. I think it's widely unspoken rule already that someone with lots and lots of replies, can't make it through all of them. I've been in threads where I felt like I was answering or defending against almost everybody. I didn't reply to everyone, but neither do I remember anyone resenting that I didn't.Hwen Hoshino wrote:

Remember that you also write your post for lurkers. Dozens of people, sometimes over a 100, read this forum every week. Your overlooked post probably isn't being overlooked.
Most importantly, you post for yourself, to clarify your thoughts & refine your argument.

If you take an insult or two as a forum regular, then you might as well leave now. It's not a big deal and it's going to happen at some point. You don't have to debate 20 people at once an no one is forcing you to.Hwen Hoshino wrote:The way the political Internet works you will be accused of cowardice and your will be called insane ''hearing voices'' etc...BjornP wrote:I didn't reply to everyone, but neither do I remember anyone resenting that I didn't.Hwen Hoshino wrote:

Ignoring them or laughing at them, I find are top options. You don't owe them shit.Hwen Hoshino wrote:What if people clearly want to chase me of for some heresy nonsese?
There are no guarantees but new blood wasn't a bad thing back on the DCF, and I don't think new blood would be a bad thing here on the MHF either.Hwen Hoshino wrote:What's the guarantee with more members this place won't turn into a hellhole?
