Yeah.. I mean.. you could go the big honking space shield route too. But it seems like more trouble than it's worth.

For instance..

You could build a large shield at L1 that blocks most or all of the Sun's radiation to the surface of Mars. Make it convex so that the solar-facing side is reflective, and directs most of the light to a focusing mirror suspended out in front of the shield. That focusing mirror then redirects the light back to the surface of Mars through a hole in the center of the shield. I suppose some of the radiation would breach the shield through that hole, but probably not all that much, and you might be able to increase the heat that is transferred to the Martian atmosphere at the same time to simulate the kind of light the Earth gets.

In a 50-49 vote Thursday, Oklahoma Rep. James Bridenstine, a Navy Reserve pilot, was confirmed as NASA's 13th administrator, an agency that usually is kept away from partisanship. His three predecessors — two nominated by Republicans — were all approved unanimously. Before that, one NASA chief served under three presidents, two Republicans and a Democrat.
The two days of voting were as tense as a launch countdown.

Democrats opposing Bridenstine said his outspoken divisiveness, earlier rejection of mainstream climate change science and lack of space experience made him unqualified. Republicans praised him as a qualified war hero.

It's pretty crazy they didn't see this thing until it was a day out. Do you think if the trajectory for impact was the center of North America or Europe they would have warned anyone ?
