Honestly, I think that some form of Democratic Socialism will be the next big thing. Eventually, to involve direct internet voting, with a minimal actual governmental structure.
I'm no Marxist, but there exists a middle ground between that and Dickensian/Orwellian extremes that has yet to be explored.

So, you still haven't realized what kind of damage direct democracy can cause?

I have. There still needs to be some kind of check against mass hysteria, but referendums (at the very least) should be conducted in my underwear, at home. Let's say anything extreme needs a 2/3 majority? I'm not drawing up the entire plan, but there are certainly means of distributing the power more evenly than a small oligarchy sucking each other off in an annexed chunk of Maryland.

I'm more than willing to put on some pants and get to the polls when it matters if it means those who find that to be an impediment are less likely to vote.

Effectively taking your voting power from .00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001% to .0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000002%.
Imagine how things might be different if the masses of indifferent or too-busy voters were included. What if we weren't restricted to just a couple of local tax issues, maybe a representative you've never heard of, and forgot all about by the time you got to the polls? If you could research them completely
at the moment of voting for them. This could only be a good thing for Democracy - if we still care about such things..

Is the Australian system where it is an obligation to vote with a fine for not turning out a good idea?
I tend to feel that if someone has no interest in politics and the choices therein, their forced opinion is not worth counting, could even have bad effects due to ignorance leading to badly informed decisions. We had a very high turn out in the Brexit vote but many people based their opinion on populist statements and outright lies about the consequences of leaving or staying in. This could lead to a dumbing down of election campaigns as what's the point of writing a detailed manifesto if no one is going to read it.
For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.

Do that and the US Deficit would be paid off in a few cycles.
