HR departments are seriously out of control.

My take is that HR is there to protect the company.

Of course it is. It's there to deal with the 'messy' business of handling employees, and provide immunity to lawsuits. It's a dehumanization tool writ large.

The primary purpose of our HR is to make sure we don’t miss deadlines for 401K and insurance signups. They also make everyone aware when programs change, what bennies will cost us going forward, and schedule time off (as well as give us new vacation and sick time printouts since we often forget how much time we’ve used and have coming. Useful people who know important things.

We had to watch a safety video once, for insurance purposes, after which I headed out onto the shop floor in sandals.
