I think the new specs were for the tighter regulated US market. Re-routing engine breather into the air box, bigger bumpers, bigger rear lights that sort of thing.
I learned to be a mechanic on my type 2 in my twenties. First van I lived in. I think they are 7 cubic metres inside. I now have around 55 cubic metres.

For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.

Done a little research and it turns out that the 1302 and 1303 superbeetles ran from '70 - '75.de officiis wrote:I learned to drive in a ‘73 and it had the same type of tailights and a curved windshield.Montegriffo wrote:1303 Sde officiis wrote:Is that a '73?
Twin exhaust port 1295 CC.
Curved windscreen model.
Not sure when they came in, think it was about '75 but would have to look it up.
Best Beatle made engineering wise but ugliest looking.
Not that I'm a V Dub nerd or anything.
The '73 increased the rear lights to the elephant's foot model as seen in the picture, the '74 model introduced the shock absorbing bumper mounts also seen in the picture but the '75 had a single exhaust pipe rather than the twin.
So I think it's a 1974, 1303 S 1600cc with McPherson strut front suspension with disc brakes on the front.

I'll take your word for it. We drove ours until the floor pans rusted out, which I discovered during a snowy winter's night on the way back to school when my seat became unsteady and snow began blowing in around my feet. We sold it to the guy who maintained it for us, who put new pans in and resold it.

They are silly money now over here. A good condition one costs £5k-£10k and type 2's are even more.de officiis wrote:I'll take your word for it. My parents had a type 3 fastback (varient) in the early 70's which we drove all over Europe in. Somewhere I've got a lovely black and white picture of Dad leaning out of the window with a hockey club with Mum at the wheel playing some sort of polo game in Malta. Dad helped run a driving club for the British forces stationed there.
