They usually will do it for a year. These hacks usually are profitable for them, I suspect, because after the year is up, victims have the choice to risk identity theft or start paying the credit agency for protection services.

What pisses me off is how these credit agencies actually have the balls to sell people expensive credit monitoring services to mitigate the damage of their own lack of security.

Nobody should have to pay a dime for credit monitoring services or even a single dime of the cost of dealing with stolen identities. That's all on these credit reporting agencies that make it possible. They externalize the cost of the risks of their business by making tax payers and victims pay for their own negligence.

So far it hasn't caught on, let's hope it never does.
