Really? How long do you think huge fortunes really last? Bunch of trust fund babies can dilute wealth real quick. Tech. has been able to amass wealth unlike anything in history except for the robber barons.

The Basic trend has been long for now that the proportion of self made billionaires is rising.

Yet the likely reason isn't the Tech industry itself, but the vast financial sector that makes it possible through IPOs etc. for innovators to reap the profits themselves. The reason why we have so many billionaires is basically just because of financial sector that can create money without any limits without severe inflation, actually.

Would be interesting to see a similar analysis that shows what the depth is like on this.
i.e. of the 100 richest people in a state, what fraction is self-made wealth?

And some kind of historical pattern analysis too - to see if, as it appears, self-made fortunes are dominating over the old inherited wealth of a few families
