Not wasted. The London games came in on budget (£9 billion) and on time. Unlike the $35 billion railgun which still doesn't even work yet.
Participation in all sports is up in the UK.
The Olympics bring the world together in peaceful competition and are worth every penny.
For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.

yeah, man. I can drive down to the corner store and back drunk as hell, and everything comes out alright, guess that means we can all get drunk and drive all the time then, eh?

I mean, as long as I can pull it off once or twice, it must make it perfectly fine for everyone every time, right?

Making it special at the current cost to entire populations of people is just childish. People who think this is a good idea shouldn't vote.

I like the idea of the Olympics. I just think to make it cost-effective, we should build just one Olympic city and maintain it as part of annual dues in order to compete, that are somehow tied to your nation's GDP.

The corruption in it right now is so bad, it might not even be possible to fix it, though.

L.A. is a virtual lock to host 2024 or '28 Olympics after IOC vote
http://www.latimes.com/sports/olympics/ ... story.html

The International Olympic Committee on Tuesday approved an unusual proposal to name two winners in the Summer Games bidding race between Los Angeles and Paris. Gathering at a meeting in Switzerland, IOC members unanimously agreed to the idea of awarding 2024 to one city and 2028 to the other.
..

At a time when numerous potential hosts have backed away, concerned about the billions of dollars required to stage the Games, it would behoove the Olympic movement to secure two strong candidates through the next decade.
Is this good for Los Angeles? Don't we have a high-speed rail to help fund?
By this point the new stadium will be built and it will be a part of the Olympic Games. This will make life difficult for me

Did you hear Carolla talking about the new stadium being built largely underground to keep it out of the flight path?

Bryan said, "What are they gonna do when it rains?"

Adam said, "I guess they'll have to put in some kind of french drain."

I lol'ed.

We'd be better off just building one permanent Olympic village in Greece and holding the games there every year. Maybe build another village in Switzerland for the winter games.
Agree completely. It's a total waste of resources.

No, sending a man to Mars is a total waste of resources. The Olympics have huge benefits for both the host country and the rest of the world.
Restricting the games to one country would be the slow death of the games. The games need to be inclusive, if you limit them to one country or even one continent you are excluding all others and creating division instead of unity. The unity created by the games is it's greatest benefit.

You're stuck on auto-drivel again, Monty.
