I think people are aware of that.
How does this compare to atheletic prowess or television stardom?

25% of all Nobel Prizes go to Jews.

Are people aware? Yeah, but I don't think the scale is the same. Both are hard, but the openings are disparate. Probably more lawyers than NFL running backs.

Probably goes to what DB was saying. Yeah, you're a lawyer, but are you an NFL level lawyer? I'd think that you would want it that way, too. There are some bad lawyers out there, and I assume you appreciate that people can distinguish that some lawyers are top shelf, even if there's some beer in a can lawyers too.

(I do a lot more but let's start with that.) I did it because it's the most impressive thing ever... In my opinion. It's rarer & way more difficult to achieve than any athelete, and movie stars aren't anything special either. Imagine my surprise when I found out most people don't give a Tinker's Damn?! Many, maybe even most, people are dismissive & downright nasty when they find out. There is one group who respond like I expected: young, White males. Not all, mind you, half are still nasty. Theories anyone?

p.s. I thought I'd bring this up while StA is taking a 10-count.
Humility.

Only if you think humility is a noble quality. If you think it's a characteristic of a weak person, it's probably not going to impress you.

When you have such ability, humility does better than lauding your accomplishments it over others.

Humility is a tricky card to play: if you say nothing, nobody else will; I know this from experience. 3 or 4 years ago I thought, well, maybe nobody is impressed because nobody knows, so I started advertising. Gets the hate but didn't increase the love.

Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates are both college dropouts . . . but I imagine they are more impressive to the public than any CompSci PhD you can name.

Most people can only name a single trial Johnny Cochran was a part of, but he's famous for being a lawyer.

Doctors . . . not sure we have any really famous/impressive ones in the public arena. Doctor Drew maybe? Dr. Ruth from back in the day?

People are impressed by fame and achievements.

As Patton famously said "Americans love a winner and will not tolerate a loser. Americans play to win all the time. That's why Americans have never lost and will never lose a war. The very thought of losing is hateful to Americans. Battle is the most significant competition in which a man can indulge. It brings out all that is best and it removes all that is base."

You're viewing the academic struggle and clearing the hurdles of licensing as "winning". That's not what the public is looking at, though. They want to see that you created FaceBook. They want you to get O.J. off on a slam-dunk murder conviction. They want to hear you talking masturbation on MTV with Adam Corolla. Then they're impressed.
"Hey varmints, don't mess with a guy that's riding a buffalo"
