Restricting the availability of weapons to kids has to be a reasonable way to go. Once you see weapons as offensive rather than defensive objects then banning them is perfectly reasonable.
The only religious exemptions I know of is Sihks who must carry a knife as part of their religious tennets. They are also exempted motorbike helmet laws as they are required to wear turbans.
For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.

Makes me wonder if one could form a religion to circumvent laws. Or do my commandments from god need to have a certain amount of people sharing in my delusion to be validated?
We do the same thing here. From a practical perspective I support such exceptions, but I find them distasteful.
