Re: Trump's Five Million
I'm not totally unreasonable, I'll gladly support a National Voter ID Law... as long as there is also a companion National Photo ID Law that would not only establish a secure, nationally recognizable national photo id card, but would also make it dead easy and cheap for citizens to apply for and receive, including the poorest and minority citizens. I mean, the goal is to make sure it's only birthright and naturalized citizens, regardless of background, that are voting, right?
And besides, like it or not, we already have a de facto National ID in your Social Security Number. Modern companies need some sort of national identifier to ensure people are who they say they are when getting loans or credit cards or other financial stuff, so we might as well get off the horribly hideously insecure SSN standard and start using something properly secure enough that won't completely fuck you over if it gets leaked in a hack.
I'll still vehemently oppose any attempt to reinstate Poll Taxes, though. We killed that shit for a reason.

That's all unconstitutionalDand wrote:Voting needs to require an ID, literacy test, fee, or something. There are so many simple solutions but no hope of implementing them.
If we just charged $20 and required voters to show their ID we would probably stop 99% of the fraud. Democrats have no problem cheating our system and abusing power when they have it. Buck up, cuckold Republicans, and seize the next elections by keeping people from voting.

Will there be a fee for this? Will you be fined and/or jailed if you don't have one?KerningChameleon wrote:I'm not totally unreasonable, I'll gladly support a National Voter ID Law... as long as there is also a companion National Photo ID Law that would not only establish a secure, nationally recognizable national photo id card, but would also make it dead easy and cheap for citizens to apply for and receive, including the poorest and minority citizens. Ideally, there wouldn't be a fee... but how many State IDs allow you to get one without a fee? And no, it wouldn't be illegal to not have one... but the National Voter ID law wouldn't allow you to vote without it or some other qualifying photo id (like a driver's license or passport, which I will remind you you have to pay a significant fee for now). The REAL ID Act was a shitty half measure that imposed "standards" on the states and the ids they issue... but does nothing to actually solve the issue of needing a government-issue unique photo ID.California wrote:Will there be a fee for this? The Quick Way to End the Vote-Fraud Wars? A National ID Card
As for liberty? Sonny jim, the corporations have spoken, and they have said they will not do business with American citizens if they don't have an government-issued identifying number attached to them. The time for you to speak out against the ID-fication of the SSN was decades ago. Our entire finance system is now predicated on it. I say get with the program and make the ID number one that doesn't suck. The solution is this: national ID. And right away I know what you’re thinking: SS storm troopers goose-stepping up to innocent citizens and barking, “Papers, please.” Tea partiers fret that a national ID requirement would be an intolerable expansion of government. Civil libertarians worry that it would be an intolerable invasion of privacy. “We’re not only talking about fingerprinting every American, treating ordinary Americans like criminals in order to work,” American Civil Liberties Union legislative counsel Chris Calabrese told the Wall Street Journal. “We’re also talking about a card that would quickly spread from work to voting to travel to pretty much every aspect of American life that requires identification.”
That sounds scary. But step back for a moment and listen to Anantharaman Muralidharan, a native of Singapore writing a few months ago about the identification card required of all residents there. It “doubles as a library card, it serves as identification when I apply for overseas visas or want to open a bank account. Someone’s IC also allows me to identify the other party if I get into an accident.” Hear any SS overtones? I don’t.
And it’s not just Singapore. Most European countries produce ID cards for their residents, and they’re compulsory in Belgium, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands, among others. This hasn’t turned any of those countries into police states, and it’s not likely to in the future. Here in the United States, each of us has a Social Security number, and most of us have a state-issued driver’s license—and those two things are enough to allow the government to monitor and track us already, just as easily as if we all had national ID. As Robert Kuttner, cofounder of the liberal American Prospect, notes, “The real issue is not whether government and business collect databases on citizens”—they already do that—”but whether there are adequate protections against abuses.”
This video sums up all the problems I have with the current SSN de facto status quo:

No, that is you because you lie about it. Notice you don't deny it, you just call me names. SJW reveals himself. Now go in your corner and admit the racist microtrangression tou engaged in by advocating for voter suppression.GrumpyCatFace wrote:Any sane person would have dropped this nonsense by now. CgP grey solid tuber, I subscribe. Saw that video I agree. I knew the SSN was a bad identity number when I was 17 in basic training and my drill sergeant could look at our SSN, which at the time was our SN, and just by that information guess the state we were born in and our birthdates within a couple weeks.KerningChameleon wrote:Ideally, there wouldn't be a fee... but how many State IDs allow you to get one without a fee? Tell you what, lets get comprehensive with bitch. We can reform the whole SS program and get a better national ID in ine shot. Let's be honest we aint giving the 60 year old a new national ID card and telling that petson that will lose their SsN you might tell them SS is ending. You'll get crucified. So make it for the young people 25 and under. Phase it in that way.

Another liberal here supporting the national ID card. Enough of this nonsense. I'd also like to see the SSN stop being considered secret by ANYONE! Jeezus, it was on my student ID card in the 80's. An ID number on a bulletproof card is just too useful to play games with, it's the "guvmint conspirsy" types who have killed the national ID every time with a fear that if there were cards the blackshirts could stop you and ask for it, despite that supposedly being unconstitutional.
