If this is the - Official - WWI Thread,
have to remind people here (as I've reminded earlier) about the awesome The Great War series which has been following the war week by week now for years, and is simply splendid channel on Youtube.
Goes far deeper than Dan ever could. Really educative!
The last one (so far), I guess:
Hope it lasts until 2018...

Re: - Official - WWI Thread
Those combat sequences involving troops in the trenches are staged, those aren't dead British troops they are clambering over, those are live German soldiers dressed up as British for the staged propaganda film. Very very little of what you see in terms of combat footage from World War One is real.
The troops charging out of the trenches; staged. They didn't even advance like that in WWI, line abreast, they actually advanced in file, one behind the other. Troops charging across the fields with artillery exploding all around them, also staged, pyrotechnics.
I cant find it online, but there is one actual combat footage film of British troops in an attack, very grainy, from far away, but the first thing you'll notice, nothing like the staged films, they are running in file, one behind the other, and they are taking bounds as they go, you can't see any detail, and it's a very short film, less than a minute.
It's just tiny little figures in the distance, it's a small unit, platoon minus, attacking along a ridgeline, you can see the formation, you can see them negotiating a wire obstacle, you do see one or two go down like they've been hit, straight down, dropped in their tracks, but that's about it.
For the most part tho, they did not have combat cameramen at the front, they reenacted all that stuff in the rear, huge staged battles, with pyro and effects; all fake.
