The premise was important for Western civilisation, who was on the East is irrelevant.
With a Nazi victory the oil fields of the ME would have been open to them and the war may well have been lost which would be terrible for Western civilisation.
:laughing-rolling:
If the Nazis had won at Stalingrad, the oil at Azerbaijan would have been theirs (which was the objective of the Case Blue offensive) and they wouldn't need to go over the Suez, through the Levant and up to Kirkut or down to the Red Sea to get at the ME oilfields before finding a way to somehow transport this oil home--even so, Iraq wasn't exactly cranking out the oil at the time anyway.
If the Nazis lost at Stalingrad but won at El Alamein, they still get no oil, and still have a long way to go before getting any--in any case, Operation Torch would've proceeded with or without a British victory at El Alamein, and the results would've been the same.

I doubt there is an Afrika Korps if the Itia's are not already committed in Africa and need help. I have no historical knowledge to base that on, just common sense.

The short version...
http://classroom.synonym.com/egypt-stra ... 10316.html

Northern Africa – and especially Egypt – was of strategic importance to both Allied and Axis World War II agendas for a number of reasons. First, Egypt's location served as a hub between Africa, Asia and Europe. In a world-wide conflict, control of Egypt assured effective communication lines, and important air and sea routes. Of particular importance was the Suez Canal, which provided a much shorter route for moving troops and material between the European and Pacific theaters.
Additional Strategic Value

Another reason Egypt was strategically important to the Allies was that holding that territory opened up another front in the war, easing pressure on the Soviet Union. The Allies feared that losing Egypt would effectively cut off the USSR, China and Turkey. Egypt was also considered the gateway to the Arabian Peninsula, Iran and Iraq. World War II was as much a war of machines as of people – tanks, planes, ships and other machines that required enormous amounts of oil to operate. The side which controlled Egypt had better access to the world's best sources of oil.
For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.

Short version--that's the entire article!

World War Two was lost and won in the east.

Yes, the article is the short version of the strategic importance of Egypt intended for Carlus who admitted he had no historical knowledge. 12 lines is pretty concise.
You could also add that the US was still sitting on the sidelines and Churchill felt the British needed an important victory to convince Roosevelt that the British Empire was a viable ally and not just going to fold at the first sign of pressure like some other European military powers, cough cough France cough

CHURCHILL needed a victory to remain in office. Still on the sidelines?--the Americans landed in North Africa before El Alamein was over!

Battle of El Alamein 23 Oct 1942 – 5 Nov 1942
Operation torch landing 8th Nov 1942
First major American engagement was the Battle of Kasserine Pass fought February 19-25, 1943

Without the British victory at El Alamein and the subsequent taking of Tripoli in Jan 1943 operation Torch could easily have been cancelled or been a failure like the Battle of Kasserine pass was.

And then Western Civilization would be lost... gotcha.
Monty stopped giving chase on 11/11 because he was scared. He fucked up Husky, his part in Overlord, and Market-Garden. But, you know, that's my uninformed opinion.
