So how do we get new blood here? Carlin gave us one plug in a CS show. It would be nice if he plugged us a couple more times. Should we each invite people we know?

School of hard knocks. I got my ass handed to my by Lefties for several years on DCF. It forced me to get better, understand their arguments and tactics and counter them. That's just me personally, but there is a wider trend that our 2 Dr's here have alluded to which is things are changing. We are in an upheaval period when people are looking for new ideas.Martin Hash wrote:I spent the weekend with an Australian socialist, a lawyer I've debated in the past. Now, however, my arguments are so practiced, I ate him up. Wasn't nearly as much fun.C-Mag wrote:What's missing is any strong argument from the Left. Repeating shit from the MSM doesn't cut it. Leftist thought seems to have stagnated, not just here, but everywhere.
The RAnt style posters aren't any fun either. He was a typical Lefty. We don't have any of those.
Personally, I think Social Justice killed the Left. It's just such a flawed concept, with unavoidable illogical conclusions that no one but the true radicals can even attempt to defend or promote.

I have another theory...C-Mag wrote: Personally, I think Social Justice killed the Left. It's just such a flawed concept, with unavoidable illogical conclusions that no one but the true radicals can even attempt to defend or promote.
I gleaned this from a book on developmental psychology.
That is that social justice is a "level" of psychological and moral development.
In this level we start to question our "native" values and begin to see that there are other value systems out there that may also be valid... and therefore the level of judgement of the "other" and idealization of the "not-other" can be called into question.
"Social Justice Warriors" get stuck at this level.... and take it one step further... they throw out the "native values" altogether and idealize the "other". They believe their native culture is the enemy... the tyrant... the oppressor... They idealize the oppressed and the downtrodden.
A further step beyond the step mentioned above is to reconcile one's native values into a system that can include other value systems but not idealize them. This step allows us to realistically see our native culture in a non-idealized way, "warts and all" but not to dismiss it... to uncover it's inherent value... and work to protect it and improve it.
Maybe I should be posting this in the "The Psych Ward" thread.

I don't discount this, I respect that you know that stuff better than I do, however this is what's obvious to most people with Social Justice.DrYouth wrote:I have another theory...C-Mag wrote: Personally, I think Social Justice killed the Left. You get to a point where you have a pasty white woman claiming to be black and wants to enjoy the affirmative action benefits of being black. You get a bathroom policy that says some 40 year old drag queen can be in the bathroom with your adolescent daughter. Now I don't know if that makes me a Nativist because I don't Jimmy Savile in the latrine with my daughter, all I know is it's weird and creepy.

The only thing that would be for certain if the DCF was still kicking is that we'd have new members because of Dan's podcast. That doesn't necessarily mean that we'd have more people to the left. We might have more people that are cynical. I don't feel like progressives would be attracted to Dan. It's also been pointed out to death that the "Left" we think of is dying, what's replaced it you're more likely to find on reddit and facebook. Places where people don't want to have intellectual arguments.

We might want better representation from the left, but any leftist wandering in here would need about a month to learn the English to conspiracy theory translation matrix required to even have a discussion.
The leftists who are here are already sympathetic to the right in a way that isn't reciprocal... remember the "left needs the right" and "right needs the left" threads? So there is already a selection bias problem. Maybe there would be better discussions if some of the intelligent conservatives would try to actually understand the world the way a leftist does, but that seems unlikely because trying to see the world from someone else's perspective is a trait usually associated with liberalism in the first place.
I really don't see a pendulum swinging at all. I see two distinct realities being birthed, and there aren't a lot of people capable of holding both realities in their brain at the same time, so there isn't much room for debate since sources and definitions can't be agreed upon.
