If I remember right, the first request to be a state was denied. That's the point I could see Texas deciding not to join up with the US, but they just asked again after a few years and got in.

Did Santa Anna not declare himself the Emoeror of Mexico and Napoleon of the West?
Did he not massacre civilians at Goliad and the Alamo?
That was no pussycat.

There weren't many civilians at the Alamo, and they weren't killed except a few during the combat. Santa Anna actually let the noncombatant survivors leave for the most part, since they were slaves or women, and sent one, Susanna Dickinson, to Houston's camp as a warning messenger. He did oversee Goliad, but even that wasn't unprecendented in Mexican history. He was no nice guy, but he wasn't some tyrant in the eyes of most (Mexicans and modern people).GrumpyCatFace wrote:Did Santa Anna not declare himself the Emoeror of Mexico and Napoleon of the West?

Did have a long war of independence, though. Not as they were just given their independence.TheReal_ND wrote:Mexico had recently gained independence through no fault of their own.
Anyway, independent Texas is an interesting idea. Would be a rich interesting country. And also, the US would be weaker than now.
Now the real thing would be how Texas would have coped with the bigger neighbour, the US. US-Texan relations would be the most important thing.
But what Texans lacked was a true belief in the benefits of truly an own independent country. Guess there weren't strong politicians to speak for the independence in Texas. The majority of Texans were OK with the annexation of the US. So there you have it: if a country doesn't want to be independent, it's history as an independent country will be short. Ten years with Texas.
