Amanda Terkel, the Huffington Post senior editor who authored the website's story on the Jewish couple fleeing town, also dismissed the notion that politics were to be blamed for the circulation of misinformation.

Terkel said it was wrong to conflate fake news articles that are wholly fabricated with stories that end up being incorrect because the reporter was operating on limited information.

"There is a difference between reporters misinterpreting a source or needing to correct a story versus what's now happening with fake news," she told Business Insider.

The production team even paid for material and equipment to construct and burn wooden crosses and Nazi swastikas, according to multiple sources including Richard Nichols, who is one of the featured subjects of the documentary series as the Grand Dragon of a KKK cell known as the Tennessee White Knights of the Invisible Empire. He also said he was encouraged by a producer to use the epithet “nigger” in interviews.

“We were betrayed by the producers and A&E,” said Nichols. “It was all made up—pretty much everything we said and did was fake and because that is what the film people told us to do and say.”

The advocacy group, which campaigns against racial discrimination, had been enlisted by A&E to lend support to the series. “One of the many conditions for Color Of Change’s involvement was that none of the on-air participants were being paid. It was the first commitment A&E made to us and we made it clear when we agreed to support content and marketing changes that we would withdraw if participants were paid,” Robinson said. He called upon the network to “increase the diversity of creative talent” it taps to create its programming and also to do more programs on communities that are often the target of racism.
