Russia still appears to be bogged down exactly where they have been for the last three weeks

as of right now, this is very plausibly already a stalemate

in that the Russians are basically stuck where they are right now

and they will remain largely stuck there indefinitely

they will launch offensives, those will fail

the Ukrainians will launch counteroffensives, those will fail too

and it will coalesce into a grinding World War One style stalemate roughly where the lines are now

it is exactly the same as the Soviets in the Winter War with Finland

instead of just taking one axis straight to the capital of Helsinki

Stalin wanted to emulate Hitler's invasion of Poland

so Stalin insisted that the Soviet Army launch a five pronged attack like the Germans did in Poland

the result was that the Soviet's lacked the logistics to support the five different axes of advance

and as such the Soviets ground to a halt in a Finnish hornet's nest

the Russians have made the exact same mistake here

the elite troops are the Vozdushno-Desantye Voyska : VDV Airborne Troops

the VDV unit deployed is the 7th Guards Airborne Assault Mountain Division

from Novorossiysk in Southern Military District

they appear to be in and around Kherson, they comprise the occupation force there

incidentally the only place the Russians have actually captured so far
