D drive is normally considered the Data Drive, or in this case the Database Drive, it's where the data is stored.

The theory/practice behind it is that the OS drive is written and rewritten over and over and over again, so the data itself is harder to recover if lost because the potential of it being overwritten is greater. You put your data on a drive that is only accessed to read and write that specific data, it is easier to actually recover said data if it is ever lost.

Since this D drive was only meant for databases, even with the data being wiped at a bit level, it would be easier to recover because they didn't use a security wipe, but a single pass wipe. This means the data was written over once, and in forensic terms, easier to recover... which it was.

Realistically it could have been named any letter, the letter isn't important, but people tend to label drives for logical reasons.

When data is gone from a bit wipe, it's not as easy to get back, it's not impossible, but it sure isn't a guarantee. As I said, thankfully this was a one-pass wipe, if it was more, there would be a good chance the data would be gone, and you may have only gotten a partial recovery.
