The last 5 pages have been nothing but rubbish, typical "get off my lawn" old man crap. Popular music is at the whims of the suits and producers in power. Gen-X was generally crap because the powers that be were greedy Boomers who made business and production decisions based on scientific research that showed doing certain things causes more records to be sold. That is why music starting in the 1990's became "louder" and sound the same. Prior to then the powers that be were not aware of these psychological effects, allowing for musicians to have more freedom to differentiate themselves, or try something new and different. Bohemian Rhapsody would never be allowed to be made today for this exact reason. It is too different, not loud enough, would never sell. That is why the music industry peaked in the 60's through the 80's.

Gen-X suits and producers are mostly just following in the trend the Boomers set, so Millennial music is equally crap as Gen-X music. The only hope we have is that the internet in recent years is starting to expose these tactics being used, and opening up new channels of distribution that are not reliant on the record labels. Unfortunately, when someone with a "new" or "unique" sound gets some popularity the record industry is quick to monetize it and water it down.

the way I took responsibility for my slacker lifestyle was to serve at the sharp end in the military

I concentrated all of my efforts into extreme hard work & creativity

so then I could retire to kick back and enjoy the rest of my days

Music is louder because the Fletcher-Munson effect is real, and the technology improvements in the 90s and 2000s made it easier to get more volume in production. Mostly improvements with digital limiters, noise gates, and compressors. Plus, high quality microphones dropped in value, and got used for every track, instead of just the vox.

Zep and Sabbath tried to mix as loud as they could, and would have been louder if the tech allowed it.

The loudness wars of 90s production are a technology problem, not a taste or corporate problem.

You don't have to flagellate. My generation is happy for your generation, and it gives us hope to see that a bunch of useless slackers can retire comfortably. Since we are creative, hard workers - I'm sure we will do the same.
