British artillery tends to be measured in weight though, doesn't it? The 25 lb being the WWII gun mentioned the most.Smitty-48 wrote: ↑Wed Apr 15, 2020 10:48 pm12.7mm is the diameter of the bullet x 99mm is the length of the cartridgeMontegriffo wrote: ↑Wed Apr 15, 2020 10:44 pmThat right there, 99 mm can't be the caliber it would have to be an artillery shell to be that size.
for artillery, it's a bit different
there is diameter :155mm (6 inch)
then when they say caliber, they mean the number of shells in length the barrel is : 39 caliber
so an M777A2 L39 is 155mm / 39 caliber

For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.

the longer the cartridge the more propellant, but it may or may not increase velocityMontegriffo wrote: ↑Wed Apr 15, 2020 11:02 pmThat's the bit I was getting at. Does the length of the cartridge relate to the size of the charge and therefore the muzzle velocity and range?
the NATO fifty cal is 12.7 x 99mm 928 meters per second
the WARSAW PACT fifty call is 12.7 x 108mm 860 meters per second

Is that down to a more powerful propellant then?Smitty-48 wrote: ↑Wed Apr 15, 2020 11:06 pmthe longer the cartridge the more propellant, but it may or may not increase velocityMontegriffo wrote: ↑Wed Apr 15, 2020 11:02 pmThat's the bit I was getting at. basically when they hit on something good, that becomes the standard until it is surpassed

Ah, I think I know the problem. In the US we have calibers like the 22-250. Which is 22 caliber projectile in a necked down .250 casing.
If I remember correctly, the Brits did it opposite of the States. So it would be a 250-22. And the Brits had a bunch of these with old Straight jacket 50-60 caliber bullets that were later modified. Then you would get something like a 68 caliber straight jacketed bullet, Later they would neck that down to 45 caliber and the Brits would call it a 680-450

What is straight jacketed and what does neck down mean.
Is that the way a cartridge is sometimes stepped down in size towards the slug.

Hurray for DorothySmitty-48 wrote: ↑Wed Apr 15, 2020 4:28 pmWell, it's a little chilly, there is a wind,
But it's a biblical sunset once again, church of the big sky
We still grilled our cheeseburgers out on the deck with corn
We had our teenager birthday dinner, Boyfriend & Girlfriend Forever
She baked a beautiful cake, same one she bakes every year
Very simple layer cake with homemade white icing
So it has been a very happy birthday,
Way better than last year when there was an ice storm and she cried
So thanks for the good birthday wishes, it all worked out

What kind of cake is it?

I told you it's complicated. There is a lot of jargon, and there are not set rules for naming gun ammo.
Here is a straight jacket cartridge
Here is a necked down cartridge
