I feel safe because our homicide rate is a quarter of that in the US.
I feel safe because tough regulations and penalties for possession keep guns out of the hands of most criminals and the mentally ill.
I feel safe because at a public event no one gets shot by a social outcast who's stopped taking his meds.
Mainly I feel safer because I am safer.
For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.

Same reason he can't leave you alone on climate change, he just wants to run your life. No plastic straws for you.

The article in the OP vastly overestimates the importance government must have as a moral authority, and secondly vastly underestimates the citizenry's ability to distinguish bombing foreign countries, from bombing fellow citizens.

The actions of one's government towards foreign countries' inhabitants has never had anything to do with how a people treated each other.

In the OT Bible, there are numerous accounts of the ancient Hebrews making war on neighbouring states and raping their, bashing in the skulls of newborn and enslaving its people. Did that mean that ancient Hebrews thought that sort of behavior could justify treating their actual fellow Hebrew neighbour the same way?

Of course not. Unless we believe in a One World Community, there is no One World morality where killing a foreign civilian in a bombing run, is the same as gunning down your neighbour over a Twinkie.

It's not untill you start to see everyone in your own neighbourhood as a potential enemy or rival, that you start thinking you better kill them either before they kill you, or so at least they can't win.

Guns do that efficiently so people use guns. They aren't the cause, though. Loss of a sense of community is. If you start to see your neighbour as an enemy, well.. what's the most efficient way to dispose of enemies?
Fame is not flattery. Respect is not agreement.

A culture that worships death and places no objective value on human life is set up for self-destruction.
