Mobile Database Access

Post by SuburbanFarmer » Thu Jul 05, 2018 9:01 am

Could use some help with a tech problem.

Current State: Users access information through Google Drive, filtered to a personal sheet from a 'Master Data Sheet'. Account information, employee data, etc. They use their mobile phones to get to it in the field, and it's working well enough for account data, but isn't very scalable.

Future State: I need to convert the Master Data Sheet to a database application of some kind. I can't stand having everything in 100+ columns on a single Google Sheet, and I need more flexibility. We need to build a CRM system as well.

Google Sheets don't appear to be able to interface with MS Access or any other database software.

MS Access can't be accessed by mobile phones, except Windows OS.

So, I need some kind of front-end for a database that can accessed by phone.

Have you tried turning it off and then turning it back on again?
If that doesn't work I've got nothing.

Sounds like your employer needs to import a pajeet to replace you.

I’m just looking for a workaround to building a standalone SQL server, and having them log into it from their phones. Google Drive is very convenient like that, it just lacks a database application.

I competed with Pajeets at my first tech job. They couldn’t hold my jock strap, at this point.

Just go to a major vendor like Microsoft or Oracle. They have off the shelf products for a database with mobile device clients for secure access.

That's what I thought too. They simply aren't there yet.

3-4 phone manufacturers using different OS's, that aren't compatible with much of anything.

Dude - just set up an SQL server in AWS or Azure, Java or ASP.net (preferred IMHO) web interface....then just write a short script to import the data from the spread sheet to the database...

make the Web Interface accessible via VPN only and HTTPS.

Yeah, I am not sure about OS variance, but you can probably hit Android pretty easily.

What about this?
