Round British scones can resemble North American biscuits in appearance, but scones traditionally rely on cold butter, while biscuits are more often made with other kinds of animal fat or vegetable shortening.[16] Also, while scones are frequently (but not always) sweet, and served with coffee and tea, biscuits are served more like a bread roll, often with breakfast in the American South.

I have always wondered what a biscuit is in America.
Total misnomer really as bis cuit means twice cooked and generally refers to what you call cookies.
I had been visualising something like Navy hard tack to dip in your gravy.
Thanks for that. I had exactly the same thoughts.

biscuit = hardtack

Hardtack was baked up to 4 times to really dry it out so it would last the long voyages. Could last for years if you kept it dry and free of weevils.
A pound of hardtack and a gallon of beer was your daily ration.

It's the image I get in my head when I read the word biscuit. It's what too much Hornblower, Bolitho, Aubrey/Maturin and Ramage does to you.

Makes me think of Tolkien's Elven bread too.
Good addition to your bug out bag. Lightweight, long lasting and packed with carbs for the long walk. Dipped in a little brine to make it soft enough to eat.
Start baking boys...

You guys can get Pillsbury biscuits in the grocery store probably. That’s basically it, even though they taste a little bitter from all the chemical substitutes.

North American biscuits are a key part of a balanced breakfast. Occasionally we also have them mid-day for dinner or in the evening for supper. :P

For supper you just add gravy.

Amazing invention.

Biscuits with shrimp and grits is a good choice as well.

Why do you put sponge cloth on your burgers?
