Fife has a good plan with the bacon too.

Bag some for the fridge.
Takes about three days of keeping your carbs below 20g to hit ketosis.
And carb flu is real (headache on day 2 or 3).
If you're one of those technical type folk and you want to know for sure whether you hit ketosis or not, there are these guys:
Ketosis test strips
If you want to really nerd it up you can read about what the different hues indicate, but the test is simple - if the test pad goes from peach to anything between pink and purple, you're in ketosis. Your carb supply is low, and your body is powering through fat and feeding on the ketones in your bloodstream.

Some folks can do it by taking in less than 100g a day, but the 20g limit is a sure thing.

Just lift weights and build muscle. You don't even have to burn off fat and your fat percentage drops pretty steadily for the first year of muscle gains (which happen pretty fast for the typical male in America today who has no real muscle development). Then after a year you can diet, and your metabolism will be a lot faster because of the additional muscles.
For a man, I think it's better to drop your carbs on a diet, but instead of increasing fat, increase protein. You shouldn't really even need to cut your total caloric intake either.
