Maybe we really should gas people who want to open the city gates to countless foreigners so they can have ethnic food.
Historically, that has to be in the top ten most asinine reasons to destroy yourselves.
"guys, why you fight the Muslim armies outside the gates of Vienna?? If we just let them inside and submit as slaves to Islam, we'd get all this ethnic food!"

I hear the Romans did something like that- the gluttony for new and exotic/luxurient foods has been pegged as one of the key components of their moral decline late-Republic.

Angels alone that soar above
Enjoy such Liberty" - Richard Lovelace

https://barnabyisright.com/2013/03/30/w ... of-empire/11:00 – Chefs disproportionately hallowed as empires decline
“Strangely perhaps, there’s another profession that is disproportionately hallowed as an empire declines. The Romans, the Ottomans, and the Spanish all made celebrities of their chefs.”
Perhaps Dan got it from this documentary. Don't really see it anywhere else on google but I'm not looking too hard.
Edit: it would make sense that late stage empires enjoy better cuisine while early stage empires endure more regimented diets.
