Basically we decided you need to avoid the main flow of exodus... too many variables in that mess. Either get out early, if not possible wait out the initial chaos and go in the first lull.

I'd say early or not at all. Waiting for a lull in a huge hurricane is pointless because they will shut down the interstates and highways anyway.

After the storm you have to deal with weeks of infrastructure being down. Might as well get out then. If you live in a condo, you can get all your real valuables in your car.

You don't understand. The state police and national guard will literally shut down the interstates. It's going to happen right before the storm makes landfall. Those routes are only for military, police, emergency personnel, and infrastructure teams (like power linemen).

The thing about Florida.. if you are going to get out, you need to get out sooner rather than later because there are only two major traffic routes out (Turnpike and I-95) going the entire span of the state. There are some state roads and US routes you can try to take, but that's going to be hit or miss too.

I miss it, honestly.

I tried playing a local game with some of the millennials, but they generally suck at it. They need more video-game style gameplay.
Yeah, when I think about it, it really was a video game with a really slow computer. But the fun part was when it went off-script.

When it's played well, it's not anything like a video game. It's an intellectual game that requires a lot of imagination and collective world-building.

This is especially true when your group operates in their won shared world they create themselves. Then players design their own castles, wizard towers, etc. They can build kingdoms with politics and culture.

The entire Dragonlance world is based on a series of books that were literally just adapted from a freeform D&D game.
Drizzt Do'Urden and Elminster were actually played characters as well, before they were books. Some pretty amazing stories were created in that game..

Is it illegal to stay behind during a storm if the governor declared mandatory evacuations?

You mean 75 and 95? Turnpike just goes Miami-Naples....

I think so, but they don't usually prosecute people. If the police are right there and order you to leave in person, and you refuse or fail to do so, then you could definitely get arrested.

I guess they figure people who ignore the warnings have it coming. Florida is not a compassionate state. There's no honor among thieves, and especially not between Floridians..

It's a big part of why I moved.

The Turnpike is I-75. It's just the toll-charging portion that extends the route to Miami.

If you are fleeing South Florida, the two major routes available to you is Turnpike->I-75 or I-95. That's it. Those two routes are how most traffic gets in and out of the state. 21 million people live there now.

That seems to explain some things about Florida.

As with declarations of natural disasters, I remember a co-work (from my old job) and had a story of her being forced to drive to work during a blizzard and that there was a declaration of a natural disasters and the cops would stop anyone who would be driving, decades ago (she was literally much older than me), because her old boss was always the type to refuse to close during anything. She was stopped by the cops and they told her to go home or to be arrested. She ended up literally crying to the cop because she knew that if she didn't go to work that day her boss would probably fire her.

.... ok.

75 goes all the way into Michigan. It's not a 'Turnpike', and I don't recall Alligator Alley ever being called I-75...
