I tried playing a local game with some of the millennials, but they generally suck at it. They need more video-game style gameplay.

A friend of mine and I discussed how do you decide when to bug out.
Basically we decided you need to avoid the main flow of exodus... too many variables in that mess. Either get out early, if not possible wait out the initial chaos and go in the first lull.

When it's played well, it's not anything like a video game. It's an intellectual game that requires a lot of imagination and collective world-building.
This is especially true when your group operates in their won shared world they create themselves. Then players design their own castles, wizard towers, etc. They can build kingdoms with politics and culture.
The entire Dragonlance world is based on a series of books that were literally just adapted from a freeform D&D game.

I'd say early or not at all. Waiting for a lull in a huge hurricane is pointless because they will shut down the interstates and highways anyway.
