Actually laid down to be a Battlecruiser
But was converted into an Aircraft Carrier to comply with the Washington Naval Treaty of 1922
All Battleship construction ceased as they were seen as the source of the arms race which incited the Great War.
Meanwhile they were obsolete and the age of the carrier was already at hand.

That's a lot of warbirds in one location.Seven TBD Devastators, three SBD Dauntlesses, and a single F4F Wildcat were also located farther to the west—all in a good state of preservation.
