Only because America sided with the Soviets rather than against them, when the Soviets faced the American Wunderwaffe in the Cold War, they couldn't compete, thus they were contained until they collapsed under the weight of their own tanks.
The Soviets were always playing catch up with our technology, but that's what happens when you have trouble feeding your own people. Soviets, and commies in general always go for the war of attrition. I submit there is a distinction between war of attrition and utilization of good enough tech to get the job done. The Soviets and Americans were the extreme ends of this spectrum. To the Soviets, spending lives and equipment meant trying to get the job done. To the Americans getting the job done and preserving life was more important. Thus the US relied heavily on combined arms and artillery to do the most killing. Communication was a huge advantage for the US.
