Sea power? No such thing, unless you're willing to torpedo enemy shipping - which will never happen in the age of Multinational Conglomocorps.skankhunt42 wrote:Yes, fucking this. Besides, we have around 800 military bases already sprinkled across every nation on earth. No need for big boats, except to feed our MIC contractors.

The opposite is actually the case, 99% of seapower is presence, only 1% is actually using torpedoes.GrumpyCatFace wrote:Sea power? No such thing, unless you're willing to torpedo enemy shipping - which will never happen in the age of Multinational Conglomocorps.

Meh... we've got 2-10x the naval presence of any other first world nation. It hasn't been useful since Vietnam.Smitty-48 wrote:The opposite is actually the case, 99% of seapower is presence, only 1% is actually using torpedoes.GrumpyCatFace wrote:Sea power? I mean, we could send an attack submarine after some Somali pirates, but it wouldn't change the situation much. Tomahawks looked cool as fuck blowing up Baghdad, but some nice fireworks would have accomplished the same.
At this point, the US Navy is so OP as to become comic relief, and little more.

Pretty simple equation; America has ruled the waves since the Second World War, in that time, how many naval battles of consequence has America fought? How many torpedoes has America fired in anger? Here's a hint; none.
Seapower is like a cop who ceaselessly walks the beat, showing constant presence, but who almost never pulls his gun and fires it in anger.

Re: The Mess
You look at how America defeated the Soviets at sea in the Cold War, nary a shot fired, the threat of the Soviet Navy, was neutralized, and by extension, the threat of the entire Soviet war machine, simply by showing constant presence, the ultimate expression of this was SOSUS and the Submarines, the Soviet submarines were the existential threat, but merely by being constantly on the beat, tracking them wherever they went, being right up behind them in the saddle, the Navy rendered the Soviets impotent, if the Soviet submarines could not get the jump on America, the Soviets had no hope of winning a Third World War, by the Navy being ceaselessly up in their baffles, the cops on the beat nipped things in the bud before they ever reached the point of them having to draw their torpedoes and fire.
This is how your rule the waves, not by fighting for them, simply by ruling them with presence, so that things never escalate to the point of a shoot out in the first place.
