Define it how you like Penner.
I see prepping as a bad mix of old survivalism and modern American over shopping. That's why I prefer topics on Self Reliance. Stockpiling a bunch of shit can be nothing more than hording, but being self reliant has benefits to the usefulness of people and builds the human spirit. I don't care if it's mending socks or raising your own food. To me there is a huge distinction, maybe not for you.
I don't see much of a difference, really. It's just a matter of avoiding extremes, as with anything else. Some people go nuts, and others keep it balanced.

I just think it's important to possess the skills to provide for your family, in case you need them.

If you are ever prepping of anything, I do think these are the best skills to learn (and this is in no pictural order here)

- CPR/First Aide

- forging for food, water, and other supplies.

- shooting (including reloading, handling, cleaning, and storage, etc...)

- gardening/farming (if possible)

- bartering

- being self-sufficient as possible.

- and finally beer brewing and making liquor. In my opinion, when civilization falls, everyone is going to want to drink. Plus, liquor can be used for trading/bartering, cleaning/disinfecting, cooking, and also drinking.

One skill that might be helpful: producing potable water after water sources have been radiated. Consider most reverse osmosis systems need significant electricity to run, especially those for producing large amounts of potable water.

I've always figured that we'd get by with rain barrels.. another project I need to finish this summer.

Water is my big problem. I could walk down to the river and filter it, but that's a good 3/4 mile or so.

Good List Penner. First Aid and Medical are hard for the average person to do comprehensively. Unless you are a healthcare professional there is only so much you can really do.

The one that people debate the most out of your list is the brewing. The hardcore JWR, Reborn Christians consider it taboo. I think a bit more realistically. I'm not sure I'll ever be a brewer, but I have do have some hops growing. Which I'm currently looking for a local guy who is good at brewing to do a little horse trading. On this subject, you just can't fight human nature and history. In all crisis situations, alcohol, drugs, tobacco are in demand. To me it's foolish to disregard it or try to prohibit it.
