Does the 2nd give you the right to arm bears?
For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.

I don't remember what Mauser you had. Most bears in Sweden are shot with 6.5 but I think polar bears are usually bigger. Since we are talking self-defense and not hunting you could consider a pump action with slugs. That is what I have heard recommended. You will have to shoot it at close range from the front towards the head and shoulders, not a silhouette lung shot. Different rules. Also, bring a signal pistol for warning shots. Scare it away.Otern wrote:Anyone know what would be good for polar bears? Considering moving to Svalbard some time in the future. Or at least visit that place. But polar bears are big and scary, and I don't trust my Mauser for that, even with a bayonet attached.
Would a pump action shotgun with slugs suffice? Or would a lever action be better?
Most guides up there make do with .308 or 30-06.

Consider the only way to know for sure is to shoot one. At close range..
And if it does not work, God Natt.

My ancestors are smiling upon me. Can you say the same?
