I don't remember what Mauser you had. Most bears in Sweden are shot with 6.5 but I think polar bears are usually bigger. Since we are talking self-defense and not hunting you could consider a pump action with slugs. That is what I have heard recommended. You will have to shoot it at close range from the front towards the head and shoulders, not a silhouette lung shot. Different rules. Also, bring a signal pistol for warning shots. Scare it away.

Most guides up there make do with .308 or 30-06.
