In the real world it took several years both times for the politicians to wait for public opinion to be strong enough that they could declare war. In WWII it took a full on attack by the Japanese before opinion was strong enough in favour for you to join the war. Smaller lest costly wars in the ME not so much.

But we didn't have an all volunteer army back then- we do now and did have one for the Iraq and Afganistan wars. That is a big difference in that the public isn't so much invested (or at least more distracted by) since there is no draft for random amounts of people to be drafted to fight in future wars.

Hey I'm just trying to counter the naive idea that politicians care nothing about public opinion when they commit to sending men to war. Don't go confusing things with totally relative facts.
If people haven't worked it out yet, what politicians are most interested in is re-election and unpopular wars are not good strategy for that.

Don't get me wrong, if the vested interests are strong enough then a little thing like public opinion isn't going to get in the way. But then again no one likes the price of oil going up so it usually works out OK in the end.

I mentioned no massive casualties. A lot of it is because medical advances but way less people die than in past long US wars.
