The thing that makes it great is the esprit de corps. They embrace the suck, they embrace the mission.

No matter how shitty things get, they can take it, for the Regiment, for the Legion.

They have pride. They are self motivating. It's not special forces, but it is elite.

And they have fun parties, the regimental stuff is cool

they have mess dinners, drink whiskey and smoke ceegars, they break bread and worship Wotan.

Something I hadn't thought about in years. My great uncle fought the FFL in Syria in 41 (?) Not really sure of the timeline, but he was later a Rat at Tobrouk, maybe at El alamein (not sure, as he died in the late 50's) then he was shipped back to fight the Japs in New Guinea. Anyhow the story came down that he said they were the toughest of the tough. Dunno what it is worth, but when you fight the Japs, Germans, Italians (lol) and the FFL and pick them as the ones you didn't want to face twice...

The biggest thing in the Legion is marching.

Their doctrine is that everything is gonna go to shit and then you're going to have to march in, on foot.

There's a fuckton of marching. Rucksacks on.

My buddy said they do a hundred mile march in two days, near the end of basic training.

There's basically only one thing they complain about.

Boredom. It gets boring. You're out in the middle of nowhere, and nobody is attacking you.

So you have to find ways to pass the time, enjoy yourself without a lot of frills.

You need a hobby in the Legion.

Like my buddy Davey became a naturalist.

He's like Richard Attenborough.

He was a bird watcher, wildlife explorer, safaris, big game hunting. he got seriously into it.

Basically you just save up your money, then when you get a couple weeks off, you Safari. Adventure Vacay.

You get yourself a high priced call girl, nice room with clean sheets, fuck the daises out of her, go see the sights.

There's nothing to tie your down, you just work, and play, and that's it, for five years.
